The Vacation Club division of Meliá Hotels International, the leading Spanish hotel company, joins the partnership with UNICEF. A unique initiative generates a 10,000 dollar donation for children in need in the Dominican Republic
ORLANDO, Florida – Club Meliá has joined the Meliá Hotels International programme to defend children’s rights by converting a sales competition into a solidarity campaign. The club is also raising funds for UNICEF through voluntary donations by guests.
All the Club Meliá sales offices, located in Cancun, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Rico, Puerto Vallarta, Punta Cana, Madrid, Marbella and Tenerife, took part in a two month competition to increase sales, eventually won by the sales team at the Paradisus Palma Real in Punta Cana (Dominican Republic).

The 10,000 dollar cheque which was due to be received as a prize, was donated by the team to help children in need in the Dominican Republic. According to Sayo Auki, UNICEF Delegate in the country, “UNICEF is extremely grateful to Paradisus Palma Real and Club Meliá for this important and generous contribution to improve the lives of children in the Dominican Republic. We are honoured that they have chosen us as partners for this solidarity action”.
The competition to raise funds for UNICEF was called the “Race for Children” and consisted of tracking the sales figures of each of the Club Meliá offices in the last two months of 2011, represented by racehorses on a “race course” which advanced in the race depending on sales.
The competition was hard fought by all of the offices, but it was finally the sales office at the Paradisus Palma Real, one of the best resorts in the Caribbean, who beat their objective by the greatest difference.
For the Club Meliá Director of Sales & Marketing, Juan Carlos Barilla, the competition gave the company a chance to motivate and unite the sales teams behind a common cause for disadvantaged children: “We have all really enjoyed this shared experience”. Denis Ebrill, Executive Vice President Club Meliá also declared himself proud of the efforts of all the sales teams, proving the full commitment in supporting children in need. “It is an honour for us to form an active part of the Meliá Hotels International commitment to UNICEF”, in reference to the successful strategic alliance between Meliá and UNICEF since 2011 to help children and raise awareness amongst guests and employees.
