bmi takes off for Moscow – airline launches first medium haul route from London Heathrow

commercial agreement with Transaero provides two daily return flights

bmi, London Heathrow’s second largest airline, has launched its daily return service between London Heathrow and Moscow Domodedovo. bmi has a commercial agreement with Transaero, which sees the Russian Federation carrier simultaneously launch the route, effectively doubling the number of return flights between the two airports to four a day.

The route is bmi’s first medium haul service and it opens up an entirely new market for the airline from Heathrow, complementing its well-established short and long haul network.

Nigel Turner, chief executive officer of bmi, said: „The introduction of flights to Moscow is a significant milestone for bmi as it marks a move into a new market, giving us the opportunity to further develop and grow our route network from Heathrow. The launch of the service has allowed us to introduce a new inflight concept and competitive fares which offer the passenger superior levels of service and value for money.“

[GADS_NEWS]Operated by an Airbus A320, the Moscow service features a specially developed product offering, setting new standards in the market. A new style business class seat with a 41 inch seat pitch, compared to BA’s 34 inch and Aeroflot’s 38 inch, is fitted in the business cabin. Personal touches and a level of comfort and service delivery not normally associated with medium haul travel help ensure that bmi provides a superior inflight experience to that of the competition. These include a pre-take-off drinks service of champagne or orange juice, a choice of quality food and complimentary drinks, and a personal in-flight entertainment player offering the latest films, TV and audio.

Through the commercial agreement both bmi and Transaero benefit from reciprocal codeshare and sales activities. This allows bmi to offer onward connections in the Russian Federation on the services of Transaero from Moscow Domodedovo. Transaero is able to offer connecting flights onto the extensive domestic, European and long haul network of bmi.

Nigel Turner said: „We are delighted to be working with Transaero and look forward to developing a strong relationship where we will each be able to benefit from the strengths in our respective home markets.“
