River City Racin’, one of South Dakota’s Great Events of 2010, will have more participants than ever this year from the American Power Boat Association (APBA) and an improved viewing area.
PIERRE, S.D. – The third annual powerboat racing event will be held in Chamberlain, S.D., on June 19-20.
A change from last year’s date made it possible to attract more boats. New this year will be 1-Liter, 5-Liter, Grand Prix and Cracker Box class boats. Organizers expect more than 30 boats on the water during the weekend and 5,000 or more people to attend.
“The number of boats this year is going to be impressive,” said Tom Davis, Event Director. “There will be a lot more racing and less down time between events.”
The 2010 Race has also switched locations, moving from its previous start at Cedar Shore Resort in Oacoma to the American Horse Campground in Chamberlain. The change will increase riverside seating for onlookers and provide more shade for the June event.
The River City Racin’ weekend also features a live concert, car show, and the Sanford Children’s Play Zone. American Horse Campground also features playground equipment and a swim beach.
“River City Racin’ not only brings the excitement of powerboat racing to Chamberlain, but also provides a great weekend to enjoy camping or staying near one of South Dakota’s gems, the Missouri River,” said Melissa Bump, Director of the state Office of Tourism. “We are excited to again host the APBA-sanctioned race in South Dakota and hope many visitors make plans to see these impressive boats in action.”
