Pierre, S.D. – The Badlands of South Dakota are the backdrop for a new film this week as shooting begins near Wall for „You Don’t Know Bertha Constantine.“
The movie, written and directed by Pierre native Andrew Kightlinger, is an independent short film about the beauty of true love and the outrageous things it causes people to do.
“This film is especially exciting for the South Dakota film industry because it uses a lot of South Dakota talent,” said Melissa Miller, director of the South Dakota Office of Tourism.
Among the cast crew are cinematographer Tristan Barnard from Malamute Pictures in Rapid City, Labyrinth Films of Aberdeen, actress and former Augustana University professor Julia Pachoud Bennett, and producers Luke Schuetzle and Adam Emerson of Pierre.
“My hope is that Bertha will see positive reviews at national and international film festivals and in turn spark a greater interest in film making in South Dakota,” said Kightlinger.
Although the film is based in South Dakota, it’s already getting attention on a national scale. Actors Bates Wilder (Shutter Island and Showtime’s Brotherhood) and David Midthunder, (Comanche Moon, The Book of Eli) have primary roles in the film.
Additionally, the screenplay for “You Don’t Know Bertha Constantine” has won multiple screenplay awards at national and international film festivals.
